Website Technical Credits

As I stated on my welcome page the Word Press theme is Twenty Seventeen. It is the default theme for Word Press and comes automatically with the installation of Word Press for websites. This theme has not been modified and displays all the default setting features.

The only issue that I have with the theme is with excerpts or rather the lack thereof. I would like to utilize excerpts for my homepage settings, that goes with the theme which will display pages content, which I like. In tracking my readers (using another theme) I noticed that hardly anyone read the synopsis of each subject and I determined that they probably didn’t know they exist.

With the Twenty Seventeen theme, one can select which pages they’d like to display on their site load. However, if they are long reads, (which mine are) getting through the content it might become, cumbersome and a turn off for the visitor. In anticipation of that reaction I searched for any information I could obtain on how to show excerpts. Turns out that the developers for Word Press, since the history of its release, have neglected to offer that as a feature.

Continue in search for a solution, I looked at the Word Press post and page editor so as to easily add a ‘read more’ tag into the post/page just after the first paragraph. If the ability to do that is there, without having to revert the post/page to html editing mode, I did not see it. So I installed a plugin called, ‘Classic Editor’ so as to expand the editor’s functions. Insert a ‘read more’ tag was not a featured item function. Then I saw TinyMCE plugin and installed that one and found the function to easily add a ‘read more’ tag without having to edit html code and create the excerpts for a site wide design. I’ve also kept the Classic Editor, as well.

Honestly though a turn on, turn off function for excerpts on pages would be a nice feature and Word Press should reconsider not offering that function within their Word Press themes, non subscription themes and/or subscriber themes, if it isn’t already there.

Another issue I faced was with cookie notifications. This is a personal blog and a place for me to practice my writing skills. I don’t expect to get a lot of traffic, so a simple solution at the present fits my needs for this domain. I use ‘Ilmenite Cookie Consent’. It provids a nice unobtrusive pop up with a link to my site privacy page and is easily configured using the admin customizer.

There are no ads on my site and I have even opted not to use links to other sites. Whether or not it pops up for EU visitors I haven’t a way to test at the present.

I looked for a plugin that would allow the visitor to opt out of cookies and withdraw their consent option. I tried a couple of them, but they didn’t seem to function properly, however, I may do a reinstall and test again, so as to make sure it wasn’t a ‘just me’ issue, facing technical difficulties utilizing the plugins options.

And that’s it for now on my credits page. For more information than I have provided, visit Word Press.org. Thank you for reading.
